Between work, school, activities, and everything in between, getting a healthy dinner on the table can feel like one more impossible task.
The good news is that a balanced meal doesn’t need to be complicated, expensive, or time-consuming. With a simple formula and a little planning, you can put together nourishing meals your whole family will enjoy, often in 30 minutes or less.
The Balanced Plate Formula
Use your plate as a guide. Instead of counting calories or following strict rules, aim to fill it in roughly these proportions:
Half the plate: vegetables and fruit. Fresh, frozen, or canned all count.
A quarter: protein such as beans, lentils, eggs, fish, chicken, or tofu.
A quarter: whole grains or starchy foods like brown rice, oats, or potatoes.
A little healthy fat from olive oil, nuts, seeds, or avocado, and water to drink.
This simple pattern naturally brings fiber, protein, vitamins, and minerals together, and helps meals keep everyone full and focused for longer.
Shortcuts That Save Time
Plan three or four dinners at the start of each week and write your shopping list around them. Cook a big batch of grains or beans on the weekend to use in several meals. Keep frozen vegetables, canned fish, eggs, and canned beans on hand for nights when the fridge is nearly empty.
Sheet-pan dinners are a busy family’s best friend: toss vegetables and a protein with olive oil and herbs, roast everything together, and dinner is ready with one pan to wash. Our Baked Sardine, Carrot & Zucchini is a delicious example.
Most importantly, involve your kids. Even young children can wash vegetables, stir, or set the table. Children who help prepare meals are often more willing to try new foods, and you get a little extra time together.
